Stremio Tech Update #82 – Stremio Update for MacOS and iOS

Posted on July 10, 2026July 10, 2026 by Alex

Stremio Lite (native app, not to be confused with Stremio v5 for MacOS) for MacOS was previously available through the App Store. We’re now releasing a new version of Stremio (native app) that is available as a notarized app outside the App Store, this means it can now support extra features such as torrent streaming. (and is no longer called “Stremio Lite”, but “Stremio” instead)

Yes, we will have 2 different versions of the Stremio app for MacOS again, the reason for this is that Stremio v5 is part of the Desktop apps family (such as Stremio v5 for Windows and Stremio v5 for Linux) which use different technologies, while the new native app for Stremo on MacOS is part of the Apple family of apps (such as the iOS and tvOS apps) and shares the same technologies as these apps, but is adapted for the desktop experience. The two MacOS apps are completely different, they have different codebase and use different technologies, so it is the user’s choice which they prefer most.

The native MacOS app keeps the familiar Stremio interface while adding macOS-specific improvements, including automatic updates and experimental native Picture in Picture support.

On macOS, Stremio now uses the system Picture in Picture window instead of a custom always-on-top player window. This makes PiP feel more natural when watching while using other apps. Experimental Picture in Picture improvements are also included for tvOS.

The native MacOS app is intended to support MacOS 10.15 and newer. Due to Apple SDK limitations, some issues may still appear on older systems such as MacOS 10.15 and MacOS 11.

On iOS, Stremio can also notify users when a newer version is available and update itself where the installation method allows it.

You can currently download the native Stremio MacOS app from this link: https://dl.strem.io/apple/macos/release/Stremio-2.0.4-19-4-1-155a8be13bad.zip

(we will include it on the website downloads in the next few days after we get some feedback from users)
