We have been receiving many reports from our users that the official OpenSubtitles addon stopped working. We started investigating and discovered that the opensubtitles.org website’s API has greatly increased security which is causing it to no longer work with the Stremio infrastructure.
We attempted to contact the OpenSubtitles staff but received no response from them yet, we can only presume that this issue was caused by an attempt to deprecate the older website and API.
So our team has worked through the entire weekend on implementing the newer opensubtitles.com API (which seems to work as expected) and deploying the changes to all our apps.
What does this all mean for you?
We have already deployed the new official addon (OpenSubtitles v3) that uses the newer OpenSubtitles.com API and issued emergency updates for all our apps. Subtitles should start working for everyone again given that you use the latest versions that we released, this is a huge change and the servers may experience high load for the next 48h. (so some issues may still arise within this time)
I’m using a guest account, should I do anything special?
If you are using a guest account (and not an account created with email / facebook) then you should check the official addons list and ensure that you have “OpenSubtitles v3” installed, if not, install it. Guest accounts are handled differently and may not have received this change, but it depends on which of the Stremio apps you use.
Will this change bring any advantages?
The fact that we switched to their new API is better because it is more future proof, it might also be better because the new OpenSubtitles API has a few subtitles that were not available in their old API and it might also improve subtitle matching a bit too.
But with every major change, you can expect some new issues. The newer OpenSubtitles API may have some issues of it’s own that the old one did not have (this is the reason why we delayed moving to it for so long, as we found issues with it when testing), and we may have new issues to handle ourselves in the new addon too, as it was coded in a rush while the old one was a mature and stable addon, heavily tested through the years.
Should we be worried?
No, we are in good relations with the OpenSubtitles staff, this was not a change made to block Stremio directly. But we were not announced of this change pre-hand so we could not prepare for it.
Thank you all for your patience.
Tanks Especially faster deployment

Thanks for your hard work! I’ve installed the new addon but upon opening any of the movies or series I’m getting ‘Error loading subtitles’ popup even for the movies/series I know it worked before – may that caused by this 48h high load thing you’ve mentioned?
